Clinton's new outdoor market opens in July

Clinton businesses will take to the outdoors every Thursday this summer beginning July 5 and continuing through August.

The market is an outgrowth of the Clinton Future Search meeting held last January and is an effort to join the economic development efforts on the South End.

Carol Flax is the market manager and Bruce Didier of Anchor Books and Coffee is chair of the Market Committee.

Publicity chair is Donna Hood, who for the past seven years has volunteered at the Visitor Kiosk at Ken’s Corner.

“There is finally an ongoing public event in Clinton,” Hood said. “When a visitor asks me about what’s happening in Clinton, now I can send them to the Clinton Thursday Market.”

The market will be held behind the Dairy Queen in Clinton Square, just off Highway 525 and for ferry walk-ons, a free bus ride up the hill. It’s a late-afternoon affair, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., to coincide with a time when many folks arrive on the island.

The Clinton Market has space for 40 vendors. Hood said a few spaces are left to provide those last-minute items visitors may need as they make their way up the island for the weekend. Possibilities include hostess gifts, flowers, a book booth, fresh produce, pet food, beauty products, garden supplies and “fairly healthy” fast food.

“Every week there will be entertainment. So, those of us who live here the week round can bring our lawn chairs and our kids and make this new market a family affair: good food, good music, good times,” Hood said.

For treasure hunters, on July 5, market goers can pick up maps with directions to delinquent tenant sales being held simultaneously at local Clinton self storage garages. Another local treasure trove, the Treasure Island flea market, is right across the street where booths can be reserved by calling Rick at 360-720-3151.

“I’m a Clinton resident, and I’m thrilled to see the hamlet I call home taking its proper place in the Whidbey scene,” Hood said.

Anyone who would like to rent a booth and sell wares, call Carol Flax, market manager, at 425-791-1192 or email clintonthursdaymarket@gmail.com. Or just go to the market and support your neighbors.
