With an eye on the big picture, a youngster has turned over his birthday money to help make a basketball court at South Whidbey Community Park a reality.

Jacob Ng, the youngest member of South Whidbey Rotary Morning Club, raised $400 for a planned basketball court at his favorite park.

“Jacob is a true entrepreneur with a heart for his community,” said Karen Franklin, club treasurer.

South Whidbey Rotary Club Foundation is raising money to support the construction of a new state of the art outdoor basketball court at the South Whidbey Community Park near Castle Park.

Jacon Ng, the son of Angela and Jack Ng, became enthused about this project and wanted to help, Franklin said.

“For his birthday he told his guests to not bring presents but to donate money to this project,” she said. “Last Tuesday morning Jacob rose early and brought his donation to the breakfast meeting – $400 that could have gone to buy him gifts was unselfishly given so that others may enjoy recreation and have fun.”

Don Rowan, Rotary president, said Ng has contributed before and has been inspiring to watch.

Rotary is matching what the community raises, up to $15,000.

“Total project cost we’re estimating at $30,000,” Rowan said.

“He had all his friends over and instead of getting gifts he got money and he gave it up knowing that Rotary would match it,” Rowan said. “That’s a great kid.”

Additional funds are still needed. Anyone who would like to contribute may send a check to South Whidbey Rotary Foundation, PO Box 444, Freeland, WA 98249 or contact Louis Muniz at Wells Fargo Bank in Freeland.
