Mary Lukinich of Greenbank has retired after 20 years with Skagit Farmers Supply in Freeland.

She was with the store since its inception, mostly as a buyer, but she also worked in billing. Lukinich said she particularly enjoyed working in the lawn and garden area of the business.

“I bought the flowers and trees,” she said. “I liked taking care of all that.”

In the beginning, Skagit Farmers Supply focused on the needs of farmers in the area, but it has since expanded to include gardening and pet supplies, clothing, eggs — “all kinds of good things,” she said.

“She was very dedicated to the customers on the island,” manager Rick Gauger said. “She always cared about them.”

Lukinich said she plans to spend more time in her own garden, and to help her husband, Rex, with his business, Greenbank Metalworks.

Does she miss her old job?

“It’s only been a week,” she said.
