McNeely hosts open house for retirement

June 20, 2012 · Updated 10:48 AM

Even after more than 20 open houses at South Whidbey Elementary School, Jan McNeely has one final open house planned.

This time, it will be for her retirement. McNeely's retirement open house will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23 at the Clinton Community Club. She hoped to see former students and her South Whidbey colleagues, and said adults and children are welcome.

The longtime teacher in the South Whidbey School District chose earlier this year to retire from a 35-year career in education. More than half of her career, 26 years, was spent teaching on the South End. For the past six years, McNeely has been co-president of the South Whidbey teachers union and negotiated with the district for teachers contracts and budget cuts.

McNeely may be best known as the elementary school's physical education teacher. She also coached sports on South Whidbey for years, and attends and works at most - if not all - home games at the high school.
