Deception Pass State Park seeks volunteers

February 12, 2013 · Updated 2:34 PM

The Rosario Beach Naturalist Program has been developed as a partnership between the park and the Washington State University Extension Island County Beach Watchers Program and has played a critical role in the recovery of the tide pools at Rosario Beach, which were battered by decades of overuse and mistreatment.

Volunteer beach naturalists are needed. They are trained to act as educators and stewards at Rosario Beach. They help park visitors understand and appreciate a unique Puget Sound ecosystem through docent interpretation and guided exploration of the Rosario tide pools. Beach Naturalists also work with park staff to provide educational support for the many local school groups that visit Rosario each spring.

Volunteers receive free instruction on tide pool ecology, marine biology, interpretive methods and other related topics from local experts and park staff. The four training classes are on Wednesdays in March from 7 to 9 p.m. at Deception Pass State Park. Two Saturday field trips will be offered as well.

No previous knowledge or experience is required, but passion for marine conservation and stewardship is essential.
