Island Church of Whidbey was out and about during its second Consider Serving Instead weekend from Sept. 27 to 29. The church doors were closed with a sign reading “The Church has left the building.” The congregation was encouraged to go out into the community and carry out acts of kindness.
People formed teams and helped clean parks, picked up trash along various roads, and helped with personal tasks for their neighbors. Some children visited the Maple Ridge Assisted Living Community to perform musical numbers for the residents. A free car wash was also held at the Langley church Sunday morning.
Pastor Dwight Ford told his congregation to help with anything they could think of.
“Church is not something we go to, it should be something we go from,” he said.
