February 11, 2009 · Updated 9:38 AM
Dane Heggenes, an eighth grader at Langley Middle School, won the school’s recent annual geography bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Heggenes, son of Don and Nisa Heggenes of Langley, will take a written test to learn if he qualifies for the state geography bee to be held April 3, said Mary Bakeman, seventh grade English and social studies teacher at the middle school.
The top 100 scorers on the test will be eligible for the state competition, she said.
State winners go on to compete for a $25,000 college scholarship in the national bee, May 19 and 20 in Washington, D.C.
