Letter: Editorial cartoons have been divisive, simplistic

Editor,

I read the “Publisher’s Column” of Saturday’s Record with some measure of disbelief.

The publisher’s expressed opinion, I think rightly exhorts all of us to take a “step back … listen to…” the ideas and opinions voiced by others. He talked about “other potential solutions.”

Solving problems and building communities we all agree is a laudable goal. Yet, for the past 20-plus years, I have subscribed to the Record, the cartoons on the editorial page promote an exaggerated political opinion that only encourages ridicule and hatred for conservative points of view.

Worse, they suggest simplistic answers to complex issues without the benefit of critical thinking. If you really want to do something positive, how about encouraging dialogue and conversation with folks we disagree with? Editorial cartoons can go a long way to promote thought and debate without demonizing either conservatives or liberals and everyone in between.
