Letter: Road etiquette and safety is important and serious

Editor,

I complain about this all the time and I do my best to enlighten people, but so far it’s not working.

We don’t have a lot of traffic on the island, but we do get lots of fog, especially this time of year. And, of course, it gets dark every single day.

We also have lots of seniors on island as well, which makes this more pertinent, and I’m one of those seniors.

We need to do a much better job of turning on vehicle headlights.

I see a lot of no-lights or, just as annoying and dangerous, high beams.

Perhaps you can see other folks while driving around in a dark car, but only because the other cars have their lights on. If you don’t also have your lights on we can’t see you. And the high beams may also help you see on our dark rural roads, but I can’t see a damn thing driving into your high beams.

Please people, use your lights starting at dusk, and remember to dim them when a car is either coming at you or in front of you.

Just a common courtesy, and I think island folks are normally a very courteous group of people.

This should be part of basic driver’s ed, at least I hope it still is.

Here’s to seeing you on the road.

Tarly Shupe
