Letter: The loud ‘sound of freedom’ drowns out everything else

Editor,

It’s 6 p.m. A gorgeous, warm, late summer evening. But we can’t enjoy it. Just had to shut all the windows and doors and come inside. The jets are flying. It’s the sound of freedom instead of the sound of the birds, wind blowing and crickets chirping.

Am I anti-Navy? No, not at all. I’m anti-noise, anti-jets flying just above my house, anti-destruction of our rural life-style, anti-destruction of the beauty of our glorious Ebey’s Reserve, loss of our farmers and farms, businesses and our tourism that we need if we are to be strong economically.

The jets flying over Central Whidbey are a travesty. My home is under a constant barrage of incredible noise. My pets flee from outside, seeking safety inside the house. Everything we’ve worked for our entire life is invested in our home.

The new, grossly increased flight schedule renders our property worthless.

We can’t sell and move somewhere else. No one will buy our home, barn and acreage with jets flying seven days a week, many hours day and night.

The old Prowlers were not like the Growlers. What’s wrong with the Navy? They’ve dug their heels in and thumbed their noses at us.

They have no love for our beloved island. There are many alternatives but they refuse to collaborate with the people of Whidbey. I’m not ashamed of my opinions.

I’m ashamed of the Navy and those people who accuse some of us for wanting the Navy to abandon flights on the OLF. I’m glad you love the sound of freedom.

Do you want to buy my house? Actually, just wait a bit and you’ll pick it up for pennies.
