LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Be careful with your mailbox on Whidbey

Editor,

Found on Friday, Oct. 21: While out for a nice walk near Wycliff and Wilkinson south of Langley, I noticed a blue Payless cloth bag in the grass on the side of the road. It was full of soggy mail from many different addresses, from Highway 525 to the Fairgrounds, which included things like Amazon bills, Bank of America statements, and Macy’s bills.

Action taken: Turned in to Freeland police. I hope they will go through all of the mail and contact everyone involved! At the very least, people will be missing some bills. At the worst, identities could have been stolen.

Suggestions: Get a locking mailbox. To paraphrase one website, “Would you leave your important papers in a shoebox on the side of the road?” We ordered one immediately. (Note that no mailbox protects outgoing mail).

Community Watch: Who are these thieves? When and how are they taking mail? If you know anything, please alert the authorities.
