LETTER TO THE EDITOR | No politics on holiday weekend

Editor,

As we gaze at the full moon and the array of stars on these clear nights,

I wonder at the majesty of the universe and its bright heavenly lights,

I also ponder America’s exalted place in that exciting world, and its might.

And of American workers whom we celebrate on this and every Labor Day,

Whose toils led to America’s strength, prosperity and well-being in every way.

Who from virgin nature carved and created all the grandeur of America to behold,

The foundation of our liberty, industrial magnificence and world charity we have doled,

And from time immemorial our values these working classes have rallied to uphold.

I also think of the heroic sacrifices made by so many brave Americans

To advance liberty here and abroad, both Democrats and Republicans.

Still, some debase America for political gain or otherwise,

And self-righteously demean its image and tenets, trying to compromise

Its international efforts that they captiously belittle and criticize.

Among those sophists are some who to our appall,

Are candidates for political office this coming fall.

Perversely, they preach doom, defeatism and dismay,

As we engage in the nation’s political passion play.

Take a breather, turn them off and enjoy Labor Day.
