Need to start listening to children about guns

Editor,

The latest advice from conservative Newt Gingrich: “Let’s arm teachers.”

What an unbelievable suggestion, that teachers should carry guns to protect kids, as in the Old Wild West. The GOP is so scared that the NRA will stop funding their elections, and they may lose a few.

Maybe the GOP should concentrate on doing the right thing in Congress, rather than where their blood money is coming from, and let teachers concentrate on teaching rather than perfecting their aim and being concerned with how much ammo they are packing.

Should teachers also get combat pay and death benefits? It would follow the logic.

Teachers should not have to be thinking about taking a bullet for their kids, but on doing the job they love: watching kids learn and bloom. But not in fear! Why does a teen need an AR-15? No one does. These are weapons of war and should stay there, until we learn to live in peace.

The second part of Gingrich’s statement was: “Don’t listen to the kids.” Why not? They are the future. They have a right to speak, after all it may be their lives on the line one day. They need our support and care, and we need to come up with better ways to protect them.

It should, in my opinion, start with common sense gun control. This is not an unmentionable. I’m sure many people would agree. Let’s do it people. Let’s talk about it and finally act. Our kids will thank us and maybe live a longer life.
