Cue the Canoe

All hands were on deck Wednesday at Clinton Community Hall to help paint a canoe with traditional whale crest designs of the Killer Whale Clan of the Southeastern Alaskan T’lingit Tribe.

The Clinton Library-sponsored event invited teens to celebrate Native Culture Day with Doe Stahr, an adopted daughter of the Killer Whale Clan.

At about 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, Stahr and her family will paddle the canoe from Clinton to Mukilteo Lighthouse Park to join the Canoe Journey 2009 to Suquamish, Wash. The event marks the 20th anniversary of the historical “Paddle to Seattle,” which was the first traditional intertribal canoe voyage in more than 100 years.

The canoe journey landing will be on Monday, Aug. 3 in Suquamish with celebratory activities going through Saturday, Aug. 8.
