Government students visit Island County offices

High school government students from Island Christian Academy recently visited several public offices that constitute the Island County Government Center on Nov. 29.

Students Casey Justus, Natalie Wilmoth, Jon Bartel, Megan Nance, Christian Nancy and Molly Quade visited 11 different county offices, including the Treasurer, assessor, general services administration, human resources, auditor, board of county commissioners, information technology, sheriff, prosecuting attorney, juvenile court, superior court, superior court, coroner, and human services departments.

During 20-minute visits, they were given an overview of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government and the responsibilities and authority of each department.

Students said the most interesting county department was the Island County Coroner’s Office.

“It was very interesting learning about the system of government in the county where we live,” said Quade in a press release.

Island Christian Academy Director Brenda Chittim and Garth Bacigalupi, an instructor, were also in attendance.

In addition to their trips to the county government offices, the government students also visited Langley, Mayor Tim Callison said. They will head to Olympia in February and Washington D.C. for a five-day tour in April.
