Music festival in Freeland hosts baroque composers

The Whidbey Island Music Festival and Early Music Underground have teamed up to present a cabaret concert of Christmas music by baroque women composers.

The event, the second of three, is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Freeland.

It will feature performances by some of America’s finest baroque musicians, including rising star soprano Natalie Ingrisano and the Early Music Underground House Band, led by Whidbey Island Music Festival director Tekla Cunningham, according to a news release. This will be an inspiring and profound program of rarely-heard motets and cantatas for voice, strings, and organ by 17th century women composers including Antonia Bembo, Isabella Leonarda, Maria Peruchona, and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, the release said.

In addition to the music, the players will talk about the music, their instruments, and stories about bringing old music to today’s world – a great experience for seasoned and first-time concertgoers alike. Refreshments (including great local wine and craft brews) will also be served.

Admission costs $25, $20 seniors and free for those 18 and below. Tickets are available at www.emuseattle.com or at the door. Call 425-224-6283 for details.
