Harvest celebration goes to the dogs
June 25, 2008 · Updated 8:35 PM
The crisp autumn air is ripe for freshly pressed cider and a brisk walk with the dog under a leafy canopy of color.
Thank goodness, then, that Apple Day and the third annual Mutt Strut comes to Bayview Corner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
This family-friendly fall event pulls out all the stops every year with activities and entertainment for all ages.
Dog owners and their canine companions can don their favorite costumes and boogie for a bounty of prizes in the Mutt Strut parade. Judges will be on hand to decipher the best doggie costume, the best owner and dog costume combo, the best smile and the best doggie trick. Emcee Jim Freeman might even be inclined to make up one or two surprise categories on the spot.
An apple-tasting station will welcome visitors at Bayview Farm & Garden where forester and graft guru Norm Brocard will be on hand to answer questions about the fine art of growing apple trees.
The Bayview Farmers Market will host the Freaky Farmers Market where ghouls, ghosts and goblins invite all to enjoy a fall harvest of offerings from the final market of the season. These ghouls will also follow tradition with their Halloween Candy Scramble at 1 p.m.
At the pumpkin-carving contest, the Fishmonger will award a store gift certificate to the best pumpkin art picked by Apple Day participants. Entries are due at the Fishmonger by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.
The talented leadership students of Bayview School will provide supplies and creative coaching for a mask-making workshop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And dont forget to bring your dancing shoes as plenty of musical entertainment will be happening throughout the day.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Neil Brown and Ro Purser will be belting out everything form Neil Young to Bob Marley and Roy Orbison tunes.
At 1 p.m. Band Du Jour takes the stage with their special brand of foot-stomping bluegrass and folk music.
Plenty of treats will be available including brats, hot dogs, caramel apples, creepy chocolates and a beer garden.
Apple Day and the Mutt Strut is sponsored by Bayview Farm & Garden, Bayview Farmers Market and Goosefoot.
Apple Day will happen come rain or shine. For more info, call 321-4145.
