Leaders from Washington State Ferries are asking Pierce County for a month-to-month extension for the Steilacoom II, which currently serves the Port Townsend-to-Keystone ferry route. The lease the ferry system has with Pierce County expires Aug. 31. The extension is needed because a vibration issue in the newly completed Chetzemoka prompted ferry officials to delay its Aug. 29 start date.

Whidbey General Hospital has offered the federal government an $854,000 settlement to make good on the hospital’s violation of rules that regulate in-house patient referrals. The offer was made in June as an attempt to address instances in which the hospital breached requirements of the Ethics in Patient Referrals Act of 1989, and subsequent regulations commonly referred to as “Stark” laws.

The Whidbey Camano Land Trust had been hoping to make history today by becoming the new owner of the fabled Trillium property in South Whidbey. But it appears history will have to wait another week. The conservation group was expecting to close with three Snohomish County banks for the 664-acre tract of forest between Greenbank and Freeland Wednesday, Sept. 22. However, some last minute but essential details have stalled the finalization of the deal, according to Pat Powell, executive director for the land trust.

With a swish of a pen, the effort to save Trillium Woods, the largest single owned tract of forestland left on Whidbey Island, came to an end. On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 29, Whidbey Camano Land Trust Executive Director Pat Powell recorded the deed and transferred the title to the 664-acre property, located off Highway 525 between Freeland and Greenbank, at the Island County Courthouse in Coupeville.
