Whidbey Island was hit by an island-wide power outage Monday night.

Most areas of the island south of Greenbank were still without power at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The blackout led South Whidbey school officials to close all schools for the day.

The power went out at just after 8:30 p.m. Monday in Langley.

Lines were beginning to form for gasoline early Tuesday morning at the Short Stop Texaco in Freeland, one of the few stations that were operating under generator power.

According to Puget Sound Energy's service alert map on the utility's website, more than 1,500 were without power at 7:30 a.m. today.
