Eleven-year-old Kaia Swegler-Richmond from Langley finished third out of 947 participants in the women’s division at the Dawg Dash 5K run on Oct. 18 in Seattle.

Swegler-Richmond, a seventh grader, ran the 5,000-meter course in 21:24, beating her time of 21:40 from last year. Swegler-Richmond’s also improved upon her eighth-place placing from 2014.

Overall, she placed 41st of 1,552 runners.

Swegler-Richmond helped the Langley Middle School Cross Country team win the conference championships, while breaking three of the four school records which date back to 2010.

For comparison, Swegler-Richmond’s time tops several runners on the South Whidbey High School girls cross country team, which races 5,000-meter courses of varying difficulty over a season. Only two Falcon girls have better times, senior Mallorie Mitchem and sophomore Elizabeth Donnelly.

The race is in its 30th year and is organized by the University of Washington Alumni Association.
