Island County Diking District 1 commissioners will have a special meeting today in Freeland.

On the agenda will be a discussion of the county’s new clean water utility, led by Island County Public Works Director Bill Oakes.

The meeting will be at 5 p.m. in the meeting room of the Freeland Library, 5495 Harbor Ave.

The clean water utility, to be phased in over two years, will help pay for efforts to handle stormwater runoff projects and protect water quality.

Property owners should expect to see a $25 assessment to pay for the utility later this year.
