Land trust to cut back on deer hunter access to Trillium woods property

Hunters will have fewer days to bag a deer on the Trillium woods property, officials with the Whidbey Camano Land Trust announced today.
"To limit user conflicts, we're reducing hunting days," said Pat Powell, executive director of the land trust.
The nonprofit organization presented interim access rules to the Trillium Community Forest on Monday. The management plan for the forest is expected to be publicly released in 2012.
Trust officials said the forest will be open for deer hunting from Oct. 15-Oct. 28 and Nov. 17-Dec. 11. No other hunting will be allowed on the property at any other time.
Officials said the property will not be open to other recreational users during the open deer hunting period.
Deer hunting season starts Sept. 1, which conflicts with recreational use of the forest.
"It's actually some of the best season for walking and horse riding on Whidbey," Powell said.
The property has been open for deer hunting in the past; the new hunting periods will reduce hunting days on the land by more than half; 37 days instead of 92 days.
Before the land trust purchased the land, hunting was allowed from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31.
