A car coming off the ferry M/V Kittitas in Mukilteo caught fire but was quickly extinguished by the ferry's crew at about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Washington State Ferries said the driver of the vehicle escaped safely.

The car was still on the transfer area at 11 a.m, blocking cars and passengers from unloading and loading.

Ferry sailings in both directions have been delayed.
