The driver in the car crash that killed three young South Whidbey men will be arraigned in Island County Superior Court on three counts of vehicular homicide on Monday, Nov. 28.

Authorities said Kaylea F. Souza, 18, of Langley, was driving her silver 2003 Chevrolet Malibu south on Wilkinson Road just after midnight Nov. 12 when she lost control after she tried to pass another car on the two-lane road and hit a tree.

Three passengers in the car — Charles “Mack” Porter III, 19, Robert Knight, 22, and Marcel “Mick” Poynter, 20 — were killed in the accident.

Police said Souza was under the influence and told a Langley police officer at the scene of the crash that she had been drinking. She told the officer, “I wasn’t that drunk,” according to court documents and yelled, “I can’t believe they let me drive!”

She also allegedly told a State Trooper at Whidbey General Hospital that she had been drinking before the crash, and had consumed a 40-ounce bottle of Mickey’s malt liquor and before that, Olde English malt liquor.
