December 10, 2011 · Updated 11:13 AM

The filing period will soon open for a seat on the board of commissioners for Diking District 1.

Position 1 on the three-member board will be up for a vote Feb. 7 if more than one person files for the seat, according to the Island County Elections Office. The non-partisan position is currently held by Ray Gabelein. It carries a six-year term.

Filing for Position 1 on the Diking District 1 board runs from Monday, Dec. 12 through Friday, Dec. 16.

Unlike other jurisdictions, state law allows any property owner of land in the diking district, who is currently a registered voter, to file for the position. Island County residency is not required. Candidates can file their declaration of candidacy for the position at the Island County Elections Office, 400 N. Main St., Coupeville.
