Competition begins for Whidbey phone book cover

Whidbey Telecom has announced the start to the phone company’s 2008 Directory Cover Art Competition for local artists. The competition’s winning artwork will be featured on the cover of about 20,000 telephone directories, which are circulated annually throughout Whidbey Telecom’s local and extended customer base.

It’s a big year for the contest, as well as the company. Whidbey Telecom is celebrating its centennial this year.

This year’s competition theme is “Colors and Flavors of Pacific Northwest Living.”

“In addition to helping to support and promote local artists, we would like to find a beautiful image to visually convey our sense of pride in our communities for 100 years,” said Whidbey

Telecom Vice President Julia DeMartini.

Recent art covers selected have included reverse painting on glass, watercolor, blown glass and digital art by well-known local artists.

“Winning the Whidbey

Telecom Directory Cover Art Competition gave me a huge boost in local visibility, not to mention real pride in representing my community in such a visible publication,” said Sandra Whiting, last year’s winning artist.

This year, the phone company would like to encourage artists to submit their best works.

The competition theme is open to broad interpretation and is open to all mediums. Entries can include landscape, figurative, impressionistic and abstract art.

All artists living within the Whidbey Telecom service areas that are at least 18 years of age are eligible.

Entries are due by May 2 and will be reviewed by a panel of judges consisting of the company’s executive management, as well as members of the local art community. Artwork must have been created after May 15, 2007, to be eligible.

The winning entrant will receive a $500 award and publication on the 2009 phone directory cover with artist credit, plus promotional exposure. The winning artwork will become the property of Whidbey Telecom.

Competition entry forms and specific details are available online at www.whidbey.com and in the Whidbey Telecom Customer Service Centers.
