Coles Road speed cut requested

Drivers soon may have to slow their roll on Coles Road.
A public hearing has been set concerning a proposal to lower the speed limit on a section of Coles Road outside Langley.
Earlier this year, Police Chief Randy Heston requested Island County Public Works lower the speed limit to 40 mph from the edge of city limits to Overlook Drive.
“Coles Road poses unique traffic hazards because the road has several curves bordered by heavy forest with large trees only inches from the white fog line,” wrote Heston in an Oct. 25
memo. “Several portions of the roadway do not have a shoulder for pedestrians, posing an extremely dangerous hazard to anyone walking their pets or riding bicycles.”
The proposed section of roadway is about two-thirds of a mile long. The current speed limit for the entire 2.5-mile road, between Brooks Hill Road and Highway 525, is 50 mph.
Although speed limit changes are usually only considered following the submission of a formal petition by the public, Island County commissioners agreed to waive that requirement in March since the request came from a neighboring public agency.
A traffic study has since been conducted.
The public hearing begins at 10:15 a.m.
Monday, Nov. 19, and will be held in the Commissioners Hearing Room in Coupeville.
