The Annual 2007 (EMI)

Like all of Ministry of Sound’s annual compilations, this was released in the waning days of last year, but the title alone makes it a natural choice for the first review of the new year. And if UK-flavoured, Dido-esque, trance-based club anthems are your cup of E—er, make that tea—what an album this is! For those looking for headliners, you’ll find heaps among these 40 non-stop pumping tracks (Roger Sanchez, Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx, BeatFreakz), as well as more than a few licks lifted from songs to keep old-schoolers like myself amused (“Party All The Time”, “Tarzan Boy”, “Layla”), but regardless of who’s spinning the mix, these discs are just chock-a-block with strong dance beats. Ministry of Sound has a long and well-respected track record when it comes to club compilations, and Annual 2007 is no exception. If your New Year’s Eve didn’t have enough get-up-and-boogie, just slip this double-disc on your stereo and be prepared to dance for the next couple of hours. Just don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
