Road grants go to Langley, Coupeville

Langley and Coupeville have both scooped up state money for road improvements.

The Washington State Transportation Improvement Board awarded road and sidewalk improvement grants to 125 local agencies totaling $104 million at its Nov. 16 meeting in Bellingham.

The grant funding comes from the revenue generated by three cents of the statewide gas tax dedicated by the Legislature for TIB programs.

Coupeville and Langley received funds to repave roads and build better ones.

Langley was awarded $750,000 to reconstruct Second Street and improve the central business district. Coupeville will have roads throughout the city repaved with $42,839 worth of help from TIB.

“These grants show drivers a local return on the tax they pay at the gas pump,” said La Center Mayor Jim Irish who is the Transportation Improvement Board Chair.
