Islanders who want input on the state’s new law that legalizes the sale and use of marijuana can travel to Mount Vernon to do so next week.
On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Washington State Liquor Control Board will hold one of its public forums on the marijuana issue at McIntyre Hall, 2501 East College Way, Mount Vernon. The subject will be how to implement Initiative 502 which voters passed last November to legalize marijuana. The liquor board has been tasked with developing rules for the growing and sale of the popular but, until now, illegal bud.
Past forums have been packed with people interested in getting into the legal marijuana business. A big sticking point is that marijuana is still illegal under federal law. The Mount Vernon forum is the closest to Whidbey of several still to come.
The forum begins at 6 p.m. with an open house with board and staff, an overview of the board’s role in implementation of I-502 and its timeline, with public testimony following from 7:15 to 10 p.m.
In its first two hearings, the Liquor Control Board drew overflow crowds at its meetings in Olympia and Seattle. The final scheduled meeting will be March 7 in Bremerton at the Kitsap Convention Center.
