Gas tops $4 a gallon on Whidbey Island

The price of unleaded gasoline topped $4 a gallon Wednesday on South Whidbey.
In Freeland, at both the Shell Station on Highway 525 and the nearby Texaco station, regular gas was selling at $4.05 a gallon.
The price for premium grades of gas was identical at both stations; $4.18 and $4.29. The cost of diesel was $4.85 a gallon.
At the Exxon station on Highway 525 in Bayview, a gallon of regular gas cost $3.99 Wednesday afternoon. Premium grades were $4.12 and $4.25 per gallon, while a gallon of diesel cost $4.85.
The cost of gas on South Whidbey was higher than the state average on Wednesday. The current average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.89, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. That's well above the average reported a month ago of $3.63.
A year ago, the average cost of regular unleaded gas in Washington was $3.44, according to the AAA.
The highest gas price reported in metro areas of Washington state on Wednesday was in Bellingham, where a gallon of regular unleaded cost $3.96.
The current national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.80; a year ago, the national average price was $3.20.
