Divers want consideration in Port of South Whidbey plans

Divers on South Whidbey lost their popular spot in Langley.

And they want the Port of South Whidbey to know they bring money to the area and deserve a voice in the discussion as the port district begins updating its comprehensive plan. Jeff Johnson, a local diver, addressed the port commissioners about the lack of bathrooms, ramps, shore access and ways to rinse their gear.

The diver’s message was heard loud and clear by the port’s commission.

“We’re definitely going to want you guys at the table,” said Curt Gordon, port president.

Installing a concrete reef off South Whidbey shores was proposed as a major draw to divers.

“Economic development around the dive community is very viable,” Johnson said.
