Nine free throw champs crowned

"Four boys and five girls, ages 10-14, were named local champions in the 2000 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship held in Langley on Jan. 15 and sponsored by the St. Hubert Knights of Columbus Council 11357.Each of the winners earned a berth in the district competition set for Feb. 12 in Anacortes, with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels.The local champions and their age divisions are: 10-year-olds, Erica Johnson and Justin Dunsmore; 11-year-olds, Caitie Newman and Sam Lungren; 12-year-olds, Jenna Dunsmore and Kenny Johnson; 13-year-olds, Jenny Newman and Philip Schorr. Courtney Hatt was the girls 14-year-old champion; there were no boys in this division.Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in the contest. Successive rounds of five free throws per contestant settled ties until a winner merged.The Knights of Columbus extended thanks to several people for helping make the event possible: Judges-scorers, Gerald Maxwell and Mike Antetomaso; registration, Renee Bilyeu; and rebounders, Brandon and Bradley Bilyeu.Also thanked are the following for publicizing the event: The South Whidbey Record, South Whidbey Parks and Rec; and four schools, South Whidbey Intermediate School, Langley Middle School, South Whidbey High School and Shared Schooling Cooperative."
