"Got a suggestion?Organizers want all of South Whidbey to reverberate with kindness during Random Acts of Kindness Week Feb. 14-20. If you know of some person or group who could use an act of kindness, call Competent Kids at the intermediate school (221-4600) or primary school (221-6200).South Whidbey kids are turning Valentine's Day into an entire week of loving their neighbors. The traditional day to express one's love and affection has now become the kick-off to Random Act of Kindness (RAK) Week, from Feb. 14 to 20, which was officially proclaimed by the Island County Commissioners.Spearheading the movement is the Competent Kids & Friendships Clubs program, directed in the primary school by Marla Shelton and in the intermediate school by Lorena Welch.Their kids jump-started RAK Week on Tuesday by appearing at the Bayview Senior Center to fashion Valentines for their elders.Seven-year-old boys seemed to predominate in the room, as they shared tables with the senior citizens where were amazed by and appreciative of their creations. Why do such a nice thing for a stranger? Aren Mattens, 7, was asked.Because we're competent! he replied, as he handed a gaily decorated big red heart to his new friend Bob Pickett.Prior to that, the kids showed up at the January school board meeting and presented certificates of appreciation to the board members for all the work they do.But their Random Acts of Kindness are hopefully just beginning. The kids are asking the community to participate, and also to offer suggestions for people who could use a little kindness. As our kind acts are emphasized for one week, and everyone experiences the ripple effect of kindness, we hope everyone will realize ways we can continue the good will, Shelton said.We want this good will to spread throughout our community, on the ferry, at the movies, stores, on the streets of Langley, and even with our brothers and sisters!Community members can participate by following the week's schedule for Random Acts of Kindness:Monday, Feb. 14: Call or Write Someone Day.Tuesday, Feb. 15: Appreciation Day.Wednesday, Feb. 16: Hug Day.Thursday, Feb. 17: Include EVERYONE day.Friday, Feb. 18: Courtesy Day.Saturday, Feb. 19: Kindness begins with ME day.Sunday, Feb. 20: Love & Family Day.All this kindness is part of a good education, according to Shelton and Welch. who believe that focusing on good points instead of bad encourages more positive behavior. So join in. Perform a Random Act of Kindness, defined as a simple act which brightens someone's day."
