"A 17-year-old Clinton boy was lucky to escape with his life Tuesday afternoon after rolling his car on Maxwelton Road.Matthew P. Slattum had just passed a car while heading northbound on Maxwelton Road at about 11:55 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. According to the Island County Sheriff's office, Slattum's 1989 Toyota Corolla crossed the center line, crashed into an embankment at the side of the road, then flipped and spun into the opposite ditch. The vehicle landed upside down, crushing the passenger compartment and leaving Slattum only a small opening in the driver's side window from which to escape.Aid workers treated Slattum for head lacerations, then transported him to Whidbey General Hospital. The sheriff's office listed the cause of the crash as excessive speed. His car was listed as a total loss."
