"South Whidbey's baseball team is looking for a league win this week after losing back-to-back games to Granite Falls to start their North Cascades League season.Weather permitting, the Falcons will travel to Sultan this afternoon and then host Sultan on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.Last Thursday the Falcons played the Granite Falls Tigers at home, losing 5-1. Jimmy Davis started on the mound for South Whidbey and threw well, according to coach Bill Patterson. He struck out eight in 4-plus innnings, but did give up a two-run double with two outs in the third. In the fourth, Falcon Jesse Sitton put his team on the scoreboard with a home run. Patterson was glad to see it, but the homer reminded him of an early-season problem for his team. No one ever hits a single, he said.Earlier last week the Falcons were walloped 16-5 at Granite Falls. They scored early and often, Patterson said. He envied the seven singles the Tigers collected in the first inning alone. Of their 13 hits 12 were singles, he said.Patterson used several pitchers in an effort to stem the tide but to no avail. The loss was credited to Sitton.I'm still trying to figure out the pitching, Patterson said. He's confident in his relievers but the starters have been shaky to date.Entering this week's action the Falcons stood at 0-2 in league play and 1-3 overall."
