Car crashes into tree

"Based on the hole in they found in the middle of the windshield, South Whidbey paramedics and EMTs thought a man they pulled from a 1990 Acura Legacy on Wintergreen Road Wednesday would be in much worse shape than they found him in.John Tramel, 43, of Langley, hit his head on the windshield when the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a tree at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Unconscious when aid workers arrived, Tramel was found to have more extensive injuries than the car's driver, Julie Wineman, 44, of Clinton.Tramel was transported to Whidbey General Hospital, then flown by helicopter to the trauma unit at Harborview Medical Center. Tramel apparently made a speedy recovery, leaving Harborview Thursday afternoon.According to the Washington State Patrol, Wineman's car was making a high-speed, right-hand turn from Deer Lake Rd. onto Wintergreen Road when it skidded into a stop sign and embankment on the far side of the roadway. The car ricocheted off the sign and embankment, crossed the center line, then crashed headlong into a tree. Law enforcement officers on the scene said Wineman was not near the scene of the accident when they arrived but was on foot on Deer Lake Road. She was later brought back to the scene, treated for injuries, then transported to Whidbey General Hospital.Wineman's car was a total loss."
