Man pleads not guilty to 3 felony charges

"A 40-year-old Langley man accused of kidnapping and assaulting his estranged wife pleaded not guilty to three felony charges in Island County Superior Court May 19.Frank Valencia was charged with second-degree kidnapping, fourth-degree assault and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence on May 5. If convicted of the kidnapping charge, he would face a standard sentence of a year to 14 months in prison.Judge Vickie Churchill approved his wife's domestic violence protection order as a condition of his release Friday.According to his wife's petition for a protection order, Valencia got upset May 2 while they were discussing the terms of their divorce. She wrote that Valencia threatened to kill her, then ripped the phone out of the wall when she tried to call 911.When she ran out of the house to get help, he picked her up and carried her back to the house, she said. Their 8-year-old son got a bat to try to defend his mother. She managed to escape and run again, but Valencia again pushed her into the house, she wrote.According to the victim, Valencia dragged her into the bathroom and locked her in and her two children tried to free her. She finally got out and the police arrived.According to the victim, Valencia has a long history of physical and emotional abuse towards her.Valencia's trial is set for August 8."
