"The Norwegian Ladies Chorus will perform Sunday, June 11 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with guest artist Vern Olsen and Whidbey Island members Alice Cydell, Christine Schwald and LaVerne Tiedeman. This special event is sponsored by the Daughters of Norway. Refreshments will follow, and a free will offering will be taken.Founded in 1936 by August Werner, a professor of music at the University of Washington, as a way of preserving Norwegian folk music, the chorus continues to perform under the directorship of Julie Svendsen Schmidt. Today the chorus is just under 40 members, comprised of first, second and third generation Norwegians. They perform locally and internationally, and have performed for King Harold V and Queen Sonja. Their most recent appearance in Norway was at the dedication of the Leif Erikson statue in Trodheim, Norway in 1997. Anyone interested in being a member of this group is encouraged to call President Barbara Grande Dougerty at 425-483-2934 or 424-883-5660; or email bgranded@earthlink.net."
