Let's go fishing!
June 25, 2008 · Updated 12:21 PM
"Coho fishing season opens Saturday, Aug. 26, at daylight on the beach in front of Possession Point Bait Company, two weeks before the scheduled opener. Rep. Dave Anderson, D-Clinton, had predicted the opening earlier this week but it wasn't official until Friday afternoon, according to the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. Anderson and Tulalip Tribes official John McCoy persuaded the Department of Fisheries and Puget Sound Indian tribes to approve the early opener ONLY for people fishing from the beach on Bait Company property. The nearby Possession Beach Waterfront Park is off limits. The targeted fish are returning to the Bait Company pond where they were raised to fingerling size by the Whidbey Island Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers. However, any coho may be retained, according to Anderson. Fisheries officials will be checking to see how many wild coho are caught. The limit is two fish per angler. McCoy cautioned that the change is for this year only. Supporters of the fishery will have to go through the season-setting process in 2001. "
