Box Tops turn into cash for schools

"Parents and teachers at South Whidbey Primary and Intermediate Schools are kicking off their 2000-01 General Mills Box Tops for Education fund-raising program -- bigger and better this year.Betty Crocker products are now included, which means Box Top logos will be on more than 330 General Mills products, brands such as Hamburger Helper, Bisquick, SuperMoist Cake Mix and many more.Students, families and community members are encouraged to save box tops throughout the entire year. Just clip the Box Tops logo from any participating GM products and send them to South Whidbey Primary or Intermediate School. The school gets 10 cents for each box top collected. This is a great opportunity for students, parents, grandparents and the whole community to come together for the good of our school and our children's futures, said Donna Ertel Riley, Box Tops for Education coordinator for South Whidbey Primary School. I urge everyone to watch for those Box Tops logos, clip them off the box and send them to the school. It makes such a difference in the types of things we can do for our children. The fund-raising concept is also a welcome one in that it requires no door-to-door selling by children and costs nothing to become involved, Riley added.Plus the school gets cash to purchase anything it wants with the money, she said.Last year, South Whidbey Primary School raised $500 through the Box Tops for Education program, with Mrs. Leach's first grade class the top Box Top collectors. This year, the school has set a goal to collect $1,000 more. Some of the suggested uses for the money are purchase and installation of a lighted reader board for the Elementary School campus, adding playground equipment and supervisors, computer hardware and software upgrades, library and take-home reading books, and other educationally supportive programs.Collection bins are set up at several South Whidbey banks, post offices, and libraries, with a central collection box in the main office at South Whidbey Primary School. Box Tops can also be mailed directly to the school at P.O. Box 350, Langley, WA 98260.
