Volleyball team opens with wins

In the battle of the birds, the Falcons easily prevailed 15-1, 15-9, 15-3.We're playing real well, said first-year head coach Tim Durbin. Each match we see something different to improve on.The Falcons dispatched Arlington 15-1, 15-9, 15-3. As the scores indicated, the game was never in doubt. Paige Jolley and Sam Watson led the way by hammering 5 kills apiece, while Erin Hussey set them up with 13 assists.Monday the Falcons hosted North Kitsap, an excellent team from a bigger school. It was a good match; they were a pretty tough team, Durbin said, adding that the Falcons will need the experience they've gained later in the year against such formidable North Cascades Conference opponents as Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley.North Kitsap swept the three games, but the Falcons battled. In game one it was 15-12, followed by 15-5 and 15-8. We hung with them, said Durbin. Jamie Nelson was credited with 8 digs and 4 kills, while Hussey recorded 11 assists, and Jenny Saephan 6 kills and 3 digs.In the season's first game, the Falcons beat Mariner 15-8, 15-8, 16-14. Saephan had 4 kills and 3 digs; Melissa Poolman 7 kills; and Hussey 4 kills and 14 assists.The Falcons will put a lot of miles on the van in the next few days. Today they're competing in the Chelan Invitational, and Monday they travel to North Kitsap. The league season begins Tuesday when the Sultan Turks visit Erikson Gymnasium. "
