"Tennis folks mix and dineWhidbey Island Tennis Association invites all island tennis players to the first annual WITA Tennis Mixer and Potluck Social today, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tennis will be played until noon on the high school courts followed by a potluck lunch at Playground in the Park. Just show up and bring a side dish. In case of rain, the event will be moved to Oct. 1.The free event is sponsored by the South Whidbey division of WITA. Interested players may join the association for a nominal fee at the event. Development of an indoor tennis facility will be discussed. For details call 341-2001 or write to WITA Box 62, Langley WA 98260.Soccer kids' skills challengedKids 14 and under can test their soccer skills in a fun, one-day event Saturday, Oct. 7 at South Whidbey Community Park, during the annual Children's Day celebration.There is no cost to enter. Competition will combine kicking skill and accuracy of kicks to determine South Whidbey's best. There is a variety of age divisions for ages 14 and under, so everyone has a chance to excel. Local winners of the Soccer Challenge for Youth will advance to compete regionally. For more information call 221-5484.Play Frisbee with a teamUltimate Frisbee for high school students is offered from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday at the Parks & Rec fields.Teams are coed, and no experience is necessary to start, though experienced players will be challenged as well. Team and individual skills will be taught by seasoned adult players. This is a good opportunity to sign up for a sport without extensive time commitments. Registration is necessary. Call Parks at 221-5484, Mark Wahl, 221-8842, or Brandon Henry, 321-7257.Floats gone this morningThe floating docks next to the boat ramp at Possession Beach Waterfront Park will be removed early today, Sept. 30.Park caretaker Art Pratt told the Port of South Whidbey commissioners that the proper tide will occur at 5:30 a.m., and from then until 8:30 a.m. that day the boat ramp will be out of action because of the room it takes to get the docks out.The docks are removed every fall to spare them from the rough winter weather.Men, women play basketsOpen gym basketball for adult men and women runs Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. through Nov. 15 at South Whidbey High School.Cost is $10 for 10 visits, or $2 per visit. Sign up for golf lessons and learn etiquette, scoring, and a variety of club strokes. Anyone age 13 or older is invited to attend.
