'HOBY' ambassador nominated from South Whidbey High

"Kiwanis member Neil Jolin with HOBY ambassador Sarah Pierce-Magdalik, center, and alternate Julie Gabelein.A South Whidbey High School selection board led by principal Mike Johnson and counselor Bob Peters, in cooperation with the Kiwanis Club of South Whidbey, has selected Sara Pierce-Magdalik to participate in this year's Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. Pierce-Magdalik will represent South Whidbey High School as an ambassador to HOBY. Julie Gabelein has been selected as the alternate participant. South Whidbey Island Kiwanis will provide the financial help for the participant's registration.Pierce-Magdalik will attend the Western Washington Leadership Seminar held in the Seattle area in May or June, 2001. She will join other outstanding sophomores from throughout western Washington in meeting with leaders in business, industry, government, education and the professions to learn about the free enterprise system and the democratic process.The local competition was open to all high school sophomores. Criteria for selection included evidence of emerging leadership ability, cooperation, sensitivity to the needs of others, ability to relate to new pursuits and acquaintances, and the desire to learn and share knowledge and experience with others. At the leadership seminar, one boy and one girl will be selected to attend the annual all-expense paid, week-long World Leadership Congress.Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership has conducted leadership seminars for high school sophomores for more than 30 years throughout the United States, Canada, the Bahamas and Mexico. "
