"Inspired to do some serious winning after suffering a 41-17 dual meet loss to Lakewood last Thursday, the South Whidbey High School boys wrestling team sent nine wrestlers to the finals and won three weight-class championships to win the Sky Valley Invitational Tournament in Sultan Saturday.Bruce Hymas, Brandon Hern, and Chris Hezel picked up wins at 119 pounds, 171 pounds, and 215 pounds, with Hezel taking his championship with a decisive pin. He said that while the competition at his weight class was not as tough as he had hoped, winning was a great boost for his season. It makes it funner, he said.Adding to the fun is the fact that the team victory at the 12-team competition is the Falcons' first tournament win in team history. Falcon coach Mike Crebbin said the team won even without its entire first-string lineup on the match. Also making the finals for the Falcons were Conley White, Mike Johnson, Luke Smith, Chris Long, Andy Wills, and Chris Martin. Crebbin said that was more than he expected.I was happy to get that many, he said.On Thursday, the Falcons got the kickstart that sent them to Sultan so hungry for a win. Only three South Whidbey wrestlers were able to win in the team's match against Lakewood. Bruce Hymas won an 8-5 decision at 125 pounds, while Sean Rumberger and Brandon Hern triumphed in lopsided decisions, each beating their opponent by more than 11 points. The Falcons wrestle next on Monday at Granite Falls.
