"A middle school dance Friday, Feb. 2 will kick off a series of three fund raisers for the Class of 2001 Graduation Night sponsored by the Parent Teacher Student Association. The Friday night dance at Freeland Hall will be for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Hours are 7 to 10 p.m. and admission is $5. Pop and candy will be available to purchase.Denise Perkins is one of the PTSA parents organizing the second annual Grad Night for seniors. The hope is to establish an annual chaperoned drug- and alcohol-free party for graduation night. The PTSA has contracted with a company called Grad Nights that has been producing all-night parties for seniors for about 10 years. On graduation night in June, the South Whidbey students will be picked up in Mukilteo and transported by bus to various destinations throughout the night. Cost is about $125 per student plus other fees such as buses, prizes for the evening, and extra food. We would also like to raise enough money to give scholarships to students who can not afford the whole cost, Perkins said.Next Friday's dance will be the first effort to meet Grad Night expenses. Others planned include:* Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, Feb. 3, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., South Whidbey High School Commons. Open to the public; cost is $5.* Parent dance on March 9 or 10, with live music and food. The place, time and cost are to be announced. Anyone wishing to help with the Grad Night effort may attend the events or send a check to Graduation Party, P.O. Box 427, Clinton WA 98236. "
