Shifty Sailors premiere new CD in concert

"Whidbey Island's popular men's singing group, the Shifty Sailors, will release their new CD, Haul On, in a concert Saturday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.The Sailors, currently 20 male vocalists, are all from Whidbey and are led by director Vern Olsen of Greenbank. They've been performing for eight years, on the island as well as throughout Western Washington, specializing in four part harmony and singing songs of the sea, sea chanteys and other rollicking melodies. Music lovers have heard the Shifty Sailors at the Island County Fair, the Coupeville Water Festival, in Seattle at Best of the Northwest and Folklife, plus in many other venues. Their new CD premieres 20 songs new to the Sailors' repertoire, including two original numbers written by Sailors Wylie Vracin and Denny Armstrong. Haul On, together with an earlier CD, Heave Ho, My Lads, will be available at a substantial discount only at this live premier concert.Tickets are $10 and $5; call WICA at 221-8268 for information.
