Young kickers shine against Granite Falls

"Playing against a Granite Falls soccer team so new that the dye in their jerseys still runs in the rain, the South Whidbey High School boys used a mix of varsity and junior varsity players to knock off the Tigers 5-1 last week.Senior striker George Supang put the game away early, putting two shots past the Tigers' goalkeeper. Sophomore Chris Martin added to the Falcon lead with a goal of his own, followed by a rare scoring shot from senior defender Aaron McCabe. Goalkeeper Mike J. Johnson, who was pulled from goal early in the game to play out, put away his third goal of the year by beating his Tiger colleague on a South Whidbey offensive drive.Team coach Mark Helpenstell said he and his coaching staff used the game as an opportunity to give the team's varsity bench and junior varsity players some big game time. JV performers included Ronnie Walther, who almost nailed his first varsity goal, and freshman Roy Ishii, who played defense almost the entire game before sitting out the last few minutes after sustaining an ankle injury.Roy stepped into the game very nicely, Helpenstell said. The Falcons' scheduled road game against Nooksack Valley Thursday afternoon was cancelled and rescheduled for April 20. Next up for the team is road game against Blaine next Thursday. "
