Help schools spend their extra cash from I-728

"If you like to help spend money, South Whidbey School District has a meeting for you.School leaders are seeking public comment on how to spend something of a windfall provided by state voters last November.The meeting will be held Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Intermediate School Community Room.Initiative 728 directed the Legislature to direct more money toward schools to reduce class sizes. The measure passed overwhelmingly with 72 percent of the vote.Soon after the election, Dr. Martin Laster, superintendent of South Whidbey schools, estimated I-728 would result in an additional $4 million to spend over the next five years. The money will come from portions of the state property tax, state lottery and emergency reserve funds. Of course, the Legislature is now in session and no funding is certain. I-728 also required public input on how school districts spend the money. At the April 18 meeting, Laster and district principals will lead an informal discussion of how the class size money could be used. "
