Sixth graders hosted seniors as part of Youth Service Day for an afternoon of dancing to the music of the Swing Again Jazz Band.Student Abbie Vehorn came up with the idea, and she and a committee of 15 other students, with the assistance of the rest of her class, planned it and made it happen. The LMS gym had a festival atmosphere-- decked out in strings of white lights, tables with white table cloths and floral centerpieces-- while both students and seniors enjoyed snacks of punch, fruit, cheese, vegetables and cookies.Part of the afternoon's festivities included a Sharing your Past booth where students interviewed senior citizens about their experiences in school and at dances when they were young. Information gathered was prepared in report form and sent to seniors after the event. Toward the end of the afternoon the group danced the Virginia Reel. The day before the event, sixth graders did a little role playing to ready themselves to play host to the 40 or so senior guests who were present.
